Brentford failed in a late bid for São Paulo youngster Wellington but have been handed a second chance after his move to CSKA Moscow fell through.
That’s according to Mundo Rubro Negro, who cover the bid from Brentford today and offer some more details on the matter after reports yesterday.
We covered a claim from Brazil yesterday that explained Brentford had been keen on Wellington and had offered €4.5m for him.
This was after weeks of speculation regarding the Bees and the 22-year-old, who had been linked throughout the summer and seen various bids for him rejected.
That report explained that Brentford had seen their €4.5m bid, which included 30% of a future sale, rejected but the player was seemingly set to join CSKA Moscow in Russia for €6m.
That would have been a little frustrating for the Bees, who had obviously been close but were quoted €20m at one point and pulled away.
Mundo Rubro Negro now cover the interest and say the player ‘almost went to play in England’ this summer as Brentford offered R$23 million to São Paulo for 70% of his rights. That works out at €4.42m in total.
The bid was rejected and that was the end of of it for this summer. It isn’t however, all bad news as the defender didn’t end up at CSKA Moscow as expected.
Instead, it appears his move to the Russian club didn’t happen as they decided to pull out of the deal due to concerns over his medicals.
“In connection with the incomplete data received following the results of the remote medical examination in Sao Paulo, the club’s medical management asked itself certain questions,” Communications Manager Krill Breido is quoted as saying on the matter.
That gives Brentford a chance to get the Brazilian after all, and they now know the exact figure that São Paulo will accept for him too.
