In the past few days, stories in the Brazilian and the English media fuelled rumours regarding Liverpool’s supposed chase for Flamengo midfielder João Gomes.
It first started with a story claiming the Reds are preparing a January offer for the player. That was published by a Brazilian journalist and not backed up by any major sources in the local media.
The rumour got a lot bigger because of a tweet published by Italian reporter Fabrizio Romano. There, it was claimed the player spoke to ESPN Brasil regarding ‘Liverpool scouting him’, and claimed to be keen on the move.
But it didn’t happen that way. Those quotes are actually from early August, long before the player was even linked to Liverpool. At the time, the youngster was conducting a livestream on Instagram and was asked by a fan if he’d like to play for the Reds.
His statement was covered by ESPN Brasil at the time, but it was never a direct interview regarding the player being followed by Jurgen Klopp or anything like that.
In addition, Sport Witness learned that there’s absolutely no active interest from Liverpool in João Gomes, with the Reds not making any contact with his staff or Flamengo regarding a move.
The 20-year-old remains a promising midfielder at one of Brazil’s greatest sides, but for now, his move to Europe is no more than a dream.
