At the weekend, Flamengo fans were caught by surprise when hearing they could soon lose Giorgian de Arrascaeta to Aston Villa.

The news came from Uruguay, where outlet Traspasos claimed that the Premier League side made a enquiry about signing the 26-year-old.

The outlet made it clear it was no more than an initial contact, and then added that the price for the move would be between US$20m and US$25m.

When Brazilian journalists started covering the news, Traspasos responded with a little more information. They made it clear that the contact was only made with Arrascaeta’s agents, adding it’d be no surprise if an offer ‘from England’ is placed once the transfer window is opened, as Aston Villa are not the only interested side.

Well, Brazilian outlets obviously went after the information. And most of them, including journalist Jorge Nicola, heard from Flamengo that there’s been no contact or bid from Aston Villa so far.

Recent reports have been claiming the Rio de Janeiro side are currently negotiating for midfielder Gerson to go to Barcelona, and that’s why it’d be a surprise if they let Arrascaeta go to England in the same transfer window.

With five goals and four assists in nine games this season, the Uruguayan star continues to be one of Flamengo’s most important assets, doing a superb job in midfield.

However, as we’ve pointed out before, Traspasos is a Twitter account who’ve been sharing information on Uruguayan players, so perhaps we better wait until the Aston Villa claims come from more sources.
