Despite the public knowledge that Fabio da Silva wants to leave Middlesbrough, it seems  the Championship club won’t make it easy to for him to go.

As the player himself recently showed a will to play for his childhood club Botafogo, the Brazilian side grew hopeful about his signing, and made early contact with Middlesbrough.

But the answer wasn’t very positive. According to Globo Esporte, the English club want £3m for the permanent transfer, as manager Tony Pulis still believes the player is important for the squad.

And to avoid letting Fabio leave for free in June, when his current contract expires, Boro are expected to activate his renewal clause for one more year.

Since there’s no way Botafogo could pay £3m for a transfer, the renewal turns out to be a good option, because it opens the possibility of finding a loan deal with Boro.

But for now, the signing still sounds unrealistic. Especially because even with a loan deal, the player would have to accept a cut in his salary before making the move.
