An Aston Villa fan was taken to hospital last night in Basel after explosives were thrown by rival fans.
That’s according to Tio. They report on ‘brawls and explosives’ after Aston Villa beat Basel in the Europa League on Thursday evening.
They state that the Swiss side’s defeat at St. Jakob Park was marked by violent incidents and the throwing ‘of an explosive device’.
According to the local police, five people were injured. They reported that shortly before the end of the match a pyrotechnic device exploded in the away end of the stadium. It injured two Aston Villa fans, one of whom was taken to hospital for treatment.
After the match, around 11pm, attacks by ‘suspected Rhineland fans’ against Aston Villa supporters were carried out in the Steinenvorstadt area. Three individuals were injured, one of them a plain clothes police officer. He, alongside two Aston Villa fans, were taken to hospital for treatment.
The situation in the city then escalated, with other Rossoblu fans becoming ‘aggressive’. To contain any violence, the police surrounded a group of ten people who had already been reported. They conducted checks and restored calm.
Security measures were then ended around 2am, with authorities now investigating the causes and exact sequence of the clashes.
For Unai Emery’s side, it’s another bad experience with Swiss fans after Young Boys supporters caused trouble at Villa Park.
