Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi has hailed Everton’s fans and how they pushed their side to safety when the two met in last season’s crucial relegation decider on the final day.

The Argentine has been speaking to YouTube channel Ezzequiel about his career so far and life in England since joining Bournemouth last season.

He joined Bournemouth in a €15m deal from Feyenoord in August 2022 and has been a regular for them since, starring last season as they avoided relegation at the first time of asking.

They ended the season in relative comfort in 15th place after a strong end to the season under Gary O’Neil but still had a huge part to play in proceedings at the bottom of the table as they took on Everton on the final day.

They travelled to Goodison Park knowing that a draw, or a win for themselves would have consigned Everton to the drop while a win for the Toffees would ensure their survival.

Ultimately, Abdoulaye Doucoure’s volley proved to be the difference and secured a 1-0 win for the hosts in a tense, nervous conclusion to a difficult season for the team from Merseyside.

They avoided relegation by the skin of their teeth thanks to a late turn in form spurred on by the fanbase, who once again did all they could to turn Goodison into a bearpit and push their side over the line, something Senesi can attest to.

“I don’t think you can compare too much the madness of our fanaticism and everything else but there are some grounds where the fans are nice and the atmosphere is there,” he said.

“I liked Anfield, I liked Newcastle, I liked the atmosphere in Leeds. Everton, it was a special date.

“If we beat or drew with them, they would go down and that day, how the people pushed, the truth is it was very strong, incredible.”
