Kanya Fujimoto’s move to Birmingham City is now 90-95% done, with everyone optimistic for weeks that it will be completed.

That’s according to journalist Sebastião Sousa-Pinto, who provides another update on the 25-year-old’s move today.

Fujimoto has been linked with a switch to Birmingham for the last month, with it explained that the Blues were pushing ahead to sign him on a free transfer this summer.

He’s set to be a free agent at the end of the month when his contract with Portuguese side Gil Vicente comes to an end.

The Japan international has been with them since 2020 after joining on loan from Tokyo Verdy, before then making the move permanent in 2022 for €600,000. He’s been a key player in those five years, with 181 appearances, 15 goals and 24 assists to his name.

He had expected to renew his deal but negotiations for that fell apart earlier this year and Birmingham have since stepped in to sign him on a pre-contract agreement.  A report yesterday, again from Sousa-Pinto, insisted that the Championship returnees were confident of getting a deal done.

The journalist now doubles down on that today and provides more positive news for Birmingham fans.

“I’m talking about Kanya Fujimoto, the midfielder whose contract with Gil Vicente ended and who is now a free agent and, as far as I can tell, 90%, 95%, has been agreed with Birmingham City,” he said on his YouTube channel.

“The clock is still ticking to seal the deal. We’ll have to keep waiting, but the feeling has been very positive for a few weeks now.

“The feeling is still very positive for the transfer to be completed, but we’re still taking it one step at a time until we can close this deal, and Kanya Fujimoto can then join the Championship team as a free agent, once again after his contract with Gil Vicente ended.

“It’s worth remembering that this is also an important factor. Fujimoto had a pre-agreement, a verbal agreement, with Gil Vicente in January to renew his contract. This agreement was not continued, and the agreement was not followed through on, so Fujimoto is leaving the club as a free agent.”
