Go Ahead Eagles are expected to welcome Birmingham City’s Alfons Sampsted in the winter market.

That’s according to Voetbal International, and they report the Dutch club have their eyes set on the Birmingham City player. He joined the Blues months after they appointed Chris Davies as manager in June 2024.

Birmingham City initially signed the right-back on loan from FC Twente, when they were in League One, before then making that transfer permanent.

An ankle injury kept him on the sidelines for over 50 days between November 2024 and January 2025. After recovering from that setback, the 27-year-old needed several weeks to regain his place under Davies before losing it again towards the end of last season.

Sampsted ended up making 17 League One appearances last season. A year ago, he was confident the English club will make his stay permanent, and they exercised the purchase clause last summer.

Birmingham City being promoted to the Championship has seen the defender lose prominence this season. Davies has handed him just 208 minutes from six Championship matches, however, he has picked up appearances in four of the Blues’ last six league matches.

Despite the recent league appearances, the Iceland international can leave Birmingham City in this window.

According to VI, Go Ahead Eagles will see their experienced right-back Mats Deijl move to Feyenoord. They are looking to replace him with an experienced player, and this is where Sampsted comes into the picture.

Birmingham City player expected to arrive

Sampsted has already played in the Netherlands for Twente and his past experience should him settle in quickly at Go Ahead Eagles. VI make no mention of a transfer fee or the formula that the Eredivisie side aim to sign him. They do state he’s expected to arrive, so there’s confidence a transfer is happening.

As well as a right-back, the Dutch club are also in for a new No.9. Go Ahead Eagles will also see their striker Milan Smit move to Stoke City and are looking for his successor.

De Stentor also reporting on Go Ahead Eagles’ interest in the Birmingham City fullback, and they hope to welcome him to the club as soon as possible.
