The Spanish media are certain Mikel San José is set to become a Birmingham City player soon. Seeing his Athletic Club Bilbao contract expire at the end of the season, the free agent has been able to take his pick of sides who are interested in him.

Last season he only made 12 appearances for Athletic, and it was a case of managerial decisions rather than injuries. A fresh start has been needed, and San José has some experience of English football, having been in Liverpool’s youth system for a couple of years.

Spanish newspaper AS report Birmingham City plan to ‘crystallise’ the player’s signing in the ‘next few hours’, and that’s backed up around Spain.

El Correo, a Basque newspaper, say the transfer is only lacking ‘official confirmation’, and they point out it was Athletic who decided against a renewal for the midfielder. He’s had interest from Spanish top division sides such as Cádiz, Osasuna and Eibar, but nothing concrete came of it.

Athletic fans will remember San José warmly, explain El Correo, and will be especially thankful for the goal in the Super Cup against Barcelona.
