Spanish businessman Amancio Ortega is not interested in buying Manchester United, despite suggestions otherwise in England.

That’s according to Cadena COPE, who have contacted those around the billionaire for clarification on a potential takeover at Old Trafford.

Manchester United find themselves on the market after current owner the Glazer family announced their intention to explore the possibility of a sale.

A whole host of names have been linked with a potential takeover since, with American technology giants Apple even brought into the mix.

One of the names suggested was that of Ortega, the owner of Inditex and the 19th richest person in the world according to Forbes magazine.

He is worth around $61.3 billion, and it was claimed a purchase of Manchester United would be relatively easy for him financially.

However, Cadena COPE report that they have contacted Pontegadea, the holding company through which Ortega manages all of his investments, and they have ‘denied the information’ that has been published in England.

Furthermore, they have denied that Ortega is ‘interested in acquiring’ Manchester United, seemingly in an attempt to put an end to any emerging rumours.

That won’t stop the mill from churning, of course, but it seems the word in Spain is that Ortega will not be among the group of interested buyers.
