It’s been nearly 13 years since Bebé joined Manchester United. but that transfer continues to be memorable for those involved in that story.
The player had lived in homeless shelters and played street leagues before turning into a professional footballer, and when featuring for Vitória Guimarães, he drew the attention from the Red Devils, who spent €8.8m to sign him in 2010.
Bebé then joined a very strong Manchester United squad. Besides being managed by Sir Alex Ferguson, he also found the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney as his teammates.
As the forward was now interviewed by newspaper Heraldo de Aragon, he recalled those days, claiming he could barely believe he was joining such a club.
“Crazy. Imagine what that was like for a child who came from a humble orphanage,” Bebé told Heraldo de Aragon.
“Getting there and from the first day seeing all of them as your companions. It was a very big shock for me. In the first weeks I sometimes wondered if this was true, if it was really happening to me or if it was really a dream.”
Bebé had two goals in seven appearances for Manchester United, having belonged to the club between 2010 and 2014, a period during which he was loaned out several times.
He’s now 32, having also played for the likes of Besiktas, Rio Ave, Paços Ferreira, Benfica, Rayo Vallecano, Eibar and finally Real Zaragoza, where he’s spending a season on loan.
