Leeds United are on their third manager this season, having sacked Javi Gracia and appointed Sam Allardyce in a last desperate attempt to save the club from relegation.
It may well work, and Big Sam will be confident he can achieve Premier League salvation, but either way it’s likely Leeds will be looking for another manager in the summer.
Allardyce came out of retirement to take up the position at Elland Road, and even if he’s successful there will obviously be a temptation to return that retirement, regardless of whether the Yorkshire club offer him a longer contract.
One of the managers very much on Leeds United’s list is Andoni Iraola. The manager is currently at Rayo Vallecano, and was approached by Victor Orta to take over before Gracia was appointed.
Though tempted, Iraola rejected the approach as he wanted to be loyal to Rayo and has a contract with them anyway.
That contract expires this summer, and there’s been talks ongoing for a renewal. Leeds United’s approach is mentioned, and they’d surely move again if they secure Premier League salvation.
However, that may well be too late.
Friday’s edition of AS says renewal talks are going very well and the word around Rayo Vallecano is that the manager will stay at the club and commit himself.
That’s described as ‘the best of news’ the club could have.
Of course, it’s not impossible for Leeds United to appoint Iraola even if he signs a new deal, but it certainly makes things more difficult.
