Memphis Depay scored from pretty much the halfway line for Lyon on Sunday, as well as scoring another more conventional goal, and Bas Dost netted four times for Sporting on Saturday, but the striker De Telegraaf are most pleased with after the weekend is Vincent Janssen.
Janssen breaking his open play duck has been greeted as great news in the Netherlands, especially because the Tottenham striker is such a popular figure. Whereas Depay would almost certainly get more column space had he done something bad in the match instead of good, that’s not the case with Janssen.
The Dutch striker has found life difficult since signing for Tottenham last summer. It was a move Janssen was very keen on, with Spurs his only choice after Mauricio Pochettino had shown an interest.
Things haven’t exactly gone to plan but Tottenham supporters have welcomed the player’s effort, even if it usually amounts to nothing.
Despite the other two Dutchman doing so well, De Telegraaf say the ‘best news’ of the weekend was Janssen’s Tottenham goal, after a ‘long radio silence’ following his transfer in the summer.
The Dutch media will be right behind Janssen now and his selection for the Netherlands against Bulgaria later this month in a FIFA World Cup Qualifier.
Tottenham can probably be thankful the Dutch media’s reaction to Janssen’s difficult Spurs season is one of support and then genuine glee when he scores, whereas they pretty much destroyed Depay at the beginning of his Manchester United career.
