Celta Vigo manager Rafa Benitez is eyeing a reunion with midfielder Jean-Philippe Gbamin after he was released by Everton.
That’s according to Cadena SER, who say the midfielder is an option for the Spanish club after the transfer window ended.
They explain that adding a midfielder to Benitez’s squad was a priority throughout the window but that never ended up happening.
Part of the problem was director of football Luis Campos being busy with Paris Saint Germain, where he also works in the same role and spent the last hours of the window wrapping up a deal for Randal Kolo Muani.
That took up all his time and energy and thus Celta ‘were left without their midfielder’ that they needed to bolster Benitez’s squad.
It’s a gap that will need to be filled and having already focused on free transfers when the window was open, they will do so again now that it is closed.
There are two options currently on the table and former Everton midfielder Gbamin, who Benitez worked with at Goodison Park, is one potential idea.
The Ivorian made five appearances under Benitez during their time together at Goodison Park and is now available on a free after Everton decided to release him from his contract at the end of the window.
Whether he is keen on a move to Spain remains to be seen, particularly as earlier this summer it was made clear he wanted to return to Germany, but the option is certainly one Benitez and Campos are looking at.
