Rafael Benitez has led Newcastle United to the top of the table in the Championship, and an immediate return to the Premier League next season looks likely.
Benitez has been helped by 13 goals from Dwight Gayle at Newcastle United so far this Championship season, with Jonjo Shelvey and Matt Ritchie helping on the assist front.
Former Napoli player and manager Andrea Agostinelli has been speaking to Calcio Napoli, and has accused Benitez of destroying Marek Hamsik.
Hamsik has been in great form under Maurizio Sarri, and Agostinelli reckons the Slovakian suffered under Benitez as he wasn’t given importance and the Spaniard wanted to replace him.
He said: “Hamisk is the best player of Napoli, and has become a symbol of the club. He suffered under Rafael Benitez, as he wasn’t given the importance and the Spaniard wanted to replace him. He was being destroyed.
“It’s strange to say, after Benitez left and Maurizio Sarri arrived, Napoli have improved a lot.”
It’s an opinion shared by many Napoli fans, who feel Benitez just didn’t have any idea how to manage Hamsik and so instead decided to isolate the player. Newcastle United fans will care little, as long as Benitez keeps them at the top of the Championship.
