Federico Chiesa was smart to make the move to Liverpool this summer, as he has nothing to lose at Anfield.
That’s according to journalist Fabrizio Ponciroli, who believes the Italian forward may have made a very smart choice in going to Liverpool.
Chiesa completed a surprise move to Liverpool earlier this week, joining in a €12m deal from Juventus.
The interest from the Reds appeared to have come out of nowhere, with reports making it clear that they had simply seen the player as a market opportunity not to be passed up.
That can certainly be argued given Chiesa cost Juventus €44.6m just two years ago when they signed him from Fiorentina.
He was allowed to leave for such a low figure thanks to his contract situation, with the Italian in the final year of his deal and Juventus keen to ensure they received a fee rather than him departing next summer for free.
Those expectations have now disappeared given the money Liverpool have paid and Ponciroli believes that could be huge.
“The unnecessary controversy over the contract could have been avoided, a thank you to the fans was enough,” he said.
“He made the best choice; Chiesa could no longer stay at Juventus. He goes to a team where he won’t be a starter, he comes in as a second or third sub and therefore he will be more calm, he will have everything to gain.
“At Juve he should have always played great games, this Chiesa struggles a lot to give continuity to his performances. I won’t miss him, he did some great things with Juve but above all I remember the negative performances, because there were too many.
“It’s unfortunate because he’s an Italian boy, another important player who goes abroad but in Italy there wasn’t a suitable place for him. Rome doesn’t seem like the right place to me, I think going abroad is the right choice, especially the Premier League.”
