Goalkeeper Keylor Navas deserved his superb debut with Nottingham Forest after suffering “many injustices” in his career.
That’s according to fellow Costa Rican Francisco Calvo, who is glad to see his compatriot shining for Steve Cooper’s side.
Navas was one of the surprise transfers at the end of the January transfer window, joining Nottingham Forest on loan from Paris Saint Germain until the end of the season.
He arrives to fill the gap created by an injury to Dean Henderson, who had been Forest’s first choice so far this year.
Whether that is still the case when he returns remains to be seen after Navas’ impressive debut against Leeds United at the weekend.
He made a series of saves to keep the away side at bay, playing a key role in his side’s 1-0 win that helped them move further away from relegation trouble.
It was a reminder of the 36-year-old’s abilities, which have not been utilised much since Gianluigi Donnarumma’s move to the club in July 2021.
One man who was more than happy to see him returning was Calvo, who has hailed his debut for Nottingham Forest in a recent interview.
“(He was) spectacular,” he told Yashin Digital.
“Navas deserves it because they have done him a lot of injustice in my view of football.
“But sometimes football is like that, it’s about coaches and sometimes when a coach arrives he doesn’t like you, he doesn’t want to play you and that’s it. That’s football.
“I’m very happy to see him play and see him make his debut with Nottingham Forest. When you are good and have quality, you can’t keep that down. He is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and wherever he is he will show his quality.”
