Newcastle United’s potential move for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili is now likely over after their recent signings of several goalkeepers.
That’s according to Levante EMV, who say the ‘market closes’ for the player after Newcastle had made efforts earlier in the transfer window.
They explain that while Mamardashvili may have had a great time at Euro 2024 and put himself on the radar for most of Europe, there is still no club who are willing to pay the €40m required to get him out of Valencia.
Newcastle had shown an interest in him and opened talks with Valencia over a potential deal, but they were reluctant to match Valencia’s demands and ultimately pulled away.
And their pursuit appears to be entirely over after they signed two goalkeepers in John Ruddy and Odysséas Vlachodimos yesterday.
That means they now have five goalkeepers in the squad, with Nick Pope number one and Vlachodimos and Martin Dubravka likely to battle it out for the number two spot, although the latter has been linked with a move away.
Either way, it seems very unlikely that they’ll be paying €40m, or indeed anywhere near that amount, for a goalkeeper now.
That’s perhaps a big shame for the player, who seems ready for a move after his performances at Euro 2024 and would have been a big hit at Newcastle to boot, who also appear to have missed out on a signing that they wanted and had to go down an alternative route instead.
