When Erik ten Hag was being linked with the Manchester United job, Louis van Gaal, who knows what it’s like to manager the Old Trafford side, warned him not to take it.
We all know what happened next, as the manager decided to leave Ajax and take over at the Red Devils.
The move looked to be a bad one at first, as Manchester United lost their two opening games of the Premier League to Brighton and Brentford, but the Dutchman has turned things around in style, going on a run of four wins on the trot.
In those games, his side beat the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal, and there is a new sense of hope around Old Trafford these days.
For Dutch journalist Nico Dijkshoorn, this would be the right time for the new Manchester United manager, if he felt the need to, to call Louis van Gaal and have a chat with him.
He wrote for Voetbal International, relayed by Twente Fans: “Erik ten Hag received the unsolicited advice from LVG months ago not to go to Manchester United. The reason why he came up with that good advice was obvious to the chastened LVG watches: he is terrified that another Dutch manager will succeed there. That some provinicial, who hasn’t even been a gum teacher, will succeed.
“I would have loved to have been there, preferably with my back to the TV to watch LVG all the time as he watched Manchester United against league leaders Arsenal on Sunday. Louis must have been through hell.”
