Burnley manager Vincent Kompany is the best candidate for the vacant Belgium manager’s job, but there are debates about whether a move is ‘feasible’.
That’s according to Belgian duo Vital Borkelmans and Marc Wilmots, who have shared their opinions on whether the Burnley boss should be the number one candidate for the role.
Belgium are on the hunt for their next manager following Roberto Martinez’s departure last week, with the Spaniard bringing an end to his reign following the failure to reach the knockout stages of the World Cup in Qatar.
There is a growing call for the country to put a Belgian national in charge of the team once more and that’s seen Kompany’s name rocket to the top of the list of options.
He has been impressing with Burnley since taking over at Turf Moor in the summer, leading them to the top of the Championship table before the break for the World Cup.
He is now seen as a leading candidate because of that, with debate now raging in Belgium over his suitability for the role.
Two men who are convinced he should be appointed are Borkelmans and Wilmots, although the latter questions whether the Red Devils would be able to get him.
“I think that the bench should be entrusted to a Belgian, there are good national coaches. I would like to see Kompany become national coach,” FC Inter News report Borkelmans saying to Zevende Dag.
“Together with Courtois, De Bruyne, Hazard, Lukaku, Meunier and Vertonghen, the young guard can form a good team.”
“After all, he was instrumental in the resurgence as a player. But he is not free, so is he feasible and does he want to do it?” added Wilmots, quoted by Voetbal Krant.
