Jhon Lucumi’s links with Sunderland have been a constant theme for many months.
The possibility of the defender staying at Bologna is now reducing further, and they’re getting ready to say goodbye.
The centre-back was subject of an offer from the Black Cats last summer. His agent had put pressure on the Italian side for a sale but Bologna managed to keep hold of Lucumi.
This has been covered extensively by Sport Witness, as the Rossoblu have since been struggling to tie the player down to a contract.
Lucumi’s contract runs out in 2027 and there are no signs of a renewal. The idea of a move to Sunderland is still very much on the cards.
Little chance Lucumi stays at Bologna
Today’s Gazzetta dello Sport assess potential exits from Vincenzo Italiano’s side. While a lot of emphasis is placed on Thijs Dallinga’s future, Lucumi’s situation also finds a mention.
The newspaper believe the 28-year-old has shown a lot of professionalism across the season. He was close to moving to Sunderland last summer but despite the failure, he has done quite well for Bologna.
Now, Gazzetta believe there is only 10% chance of him staying. This is mainly because of his contract, which expires next summer. The Italian media love putting percentages on things, and this is clearly a low one.
Even Italiano’s side seem to be convinced that he will not a new deal anymore. They wouldn’t want to lose him on a free transfer, making a sale this summer very important.
Considering all this, Sunderland should be confident when it comes to the Colombian. The deal can prove to be more accessible now, unless he attracts numerous suitors at the end of the season.
Deal can hinge on World Cup
Lucumi is likely to play a central role for Colombia at the World Cup this year. The South American side have Uzbekistan, Congo and Portugal in their group and there is every chance they finish second.
This will make the summer very important for Lucumi. If he does well, Bologna will be able to command a higher fee from his sale.
In fact, that is what the Rossoblu would hope for, knowing that Lucumi is also in demand in Italy.
Whether Sunderland would consider making a move before the tournament is unclear. Once again, they’re the only potential destination named.
