Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl has again suggested that they had a deal in place for Nick Woltemade, before Newcastle United ramped up the price tag.
SportBILD have an interview with the Bayern chief today, and he was asked directly about missing out on the forward.
The giant striker was the subject of intense interest from the German champions throughout the summer. They were reportedly keen on signing an alternative to Harry Kane and had Woltemade in their sights.
A deal was lined up with VfB Stuttgart for the striker, and all indications were that Woltemade would end up at the Allianz Arena. Indeed, it even appeared he considered it a dream move. Instead, he would end up joining Newcastle United.
They moved for him late in the window after finally agreeing a deal with Liverpool for Alexander Isak. A deal worth €85m was quickly agreed, including €5m in add-ons, effectively blowing Bayern Munich out of the water.
The German giants have been incredibly salty about the move since. So have the media, who have often lambasted the figure paid even while Woltemade has impressed.
Newcastle United blew Bayern Munich away

Now Eberl has had his say on the matter. And he’s again suggested they had a cheaper deal done before Newcastle’s intervention.
“Newcastle paid €90m for him in the summer, that’s a fact,” he said.
“We saw something special in him. The difficulties in the transfer also arose from the public discussion, where positions were discussed and leaked.
“We set a certain budget for ourselves, which VfB Stuttgart also agreed upon. Not accepted. Then we had to make a decision and say no.”
He has also ruled out a potential move in future, for the time being. According to him, getting players from Newcastle is no easy task.
“Transfers away from Newcastle are almost impossible because their investors have unlimited resources,” he added.
