Bayer Leverkusen are potentially interested in hiring Fabian Hürzeler from Brighton and Hove Albion but know it wouldn’t be an easy deal to get over the line.

That’s according to SportBILD, who report that Leverkusen are fascinated by Hürzeler but believe there is little chance of getting him.

The newspaper explains that Leverkusen are scouring the market for their next manager in the belief that Xabi Alonso will be leaving this summer.

He appears to be the number one candidate to replace Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid. The Italian is expected to announce his departure from the Bernabeu sooner rather than later.

Alonso has long been linked with the position and Leverkusen are expecting Madrid to make the move happen at some point.

That will leave the German side looking for a new coach and while Cesc Fabregas appears to be at the top of the list, competition for him is fierce. They’re looking at other names and want someone who can ‘inspire the team’ and is ‘himself on the rise’.

Hürzeler fits the bill after his first year at Brighton and ‘fascinates them’, those in charge of the club, but they see little chance of prying him away from Brighton. It’s not mentioned why, but it’s safe to assume he’s protected by a big clause they’d be uncomfortable or unable to pay.

Their focus is on Fabregas and winning the race for him, but the Brighton boss is also in their eyeline and someone they are interested in.
