Denzel Dumfries has emerged as a target for Liverpool in the last few months. Inter Milan are now attempting to keep the Dutchman away from the Reds.

In the winter transfer window, Sport Witness covered the Anfield club’s approach for the wing-back.

Even if Dumfries was injured at that point, Liverpool made contact for his signature. Inter CEO Beppe Marotta also confirmed this and the wing-back was seen as a short-term replacement for Jeremie Frimpong, who soon returned from an injury of his own.

More recently, Corriere dello Sport made it clear that Arne Slot’s side will return to the fray for Dumfries in the summer. They are attracted by his €25m release clause, seen as something of a bargain for a Premier League side.

Now, it seems like the Nerazzurri are trying their best to tie Dumfries down to a new deal.

€25m release clause can be removed

L’Interista report that the Netherlands international is seen as one of the best players at Inter. This became quite apparent in the club’s 1-1 draw against Atalanta at the weekend.

The Nerazzurri now believe Dumfries simply can’t be replaced easily. His current contract runs out in the summer of 2028 and Inter will now attempt to renew it to 2029.

The Dutchman currently earns around €4m per season and a new deal will take it to about €5m per season.

Beyond that, the Serie A league leaders want to eliminate his €25m release clause. They want to have more control over the ex-PSV player’s situation and make sure Liverpool can’t sign him for such a cheap fee.

There is belief Inter are keen to treat him with a lot of importance and give him what he deserves.

Liverpool can do better than Dumfries

It is fair to say that the Reds are yet to fully replace Trent Alexander-Arnold. Frimpong has turned more into a winger than a full-back, showing his trademark ability to carry the ball forward.

In a way, Dumfries is quite the same. He has never really been a technical outlet and his best has come as a receiver on the right wing. He is not a creator by any means and perhaps, Frimpong is better at carrying the ball forward.

Inter usually play Dumfries to his strengths and that is why he is very important to them.

For Liverpool, he could turn into a problem and weaknesses be exposed. He is 29 and is probably looking for the last big contract at the highest level. Talk of a move to Anfield would only help him and his entourage, subsequently, that could be why it keeps popping up.
