There is some good news for Barcelona, and that’s the fact they could land a very big signing next summer if all goes to plan.
This is according to Sky Germany, who have a very big article about the situation surrounding David Alaba, as the Austria international looks less and less likely to sign a new contract at Bayern Munich.
They say it’s ‘difficult to imagine’ there will be a deal extension in the end, as the latest offer made by the Bavarians to the player’s entourage was deemed ‘insufficient’.
Expiring in 2021, his contract situation means he can sign for clubs on a free next summer, and while he could move in January if Bayern accept a bid for him, it doesn’t make sense for him to transfer then.
Joining a club on a free normally comes with high wages and signing on fee to compensate for the fact no transfer fee is paid for services, and moving in the next window means Alaba ‘would forego a lot of money’.
Furthermore, it’s explained Bayern aren’t likely to weaken themselves for a derisory fee, as ‘no club pays a serious summer a player who change free of charge three months later’.
As for where he could move, there are two options: Real Madrid and Barcelona.
They are described as the ‘big favourites to sign the defensive all-rounder’, and his versatility would certainly go a long way in Ronald Koeman’s squad, as the Catalans have faced defensive struggles at the Nou Camp this season.
Yes, he would be another high wage, but he would also be free of any transfer spend, which is a big deal in Barcelona these days.
Certainly one to keep an eye on.
