When Diogo Costa did what he did last night, we just knew the links with Barcelona and Manchester United would be mentioned today in Portuguese newspapers.
During the match between Club Brugge and Porto, the goalkeeper first saved a penalty. With the referee telling the Belgian side to take it again because of a box infringement, they even changed takers, and the 23-year-old did it again.
Costa now holds a few records about that. As written by Record, he’s now saved the most penalties in Porto’s history, and the second goalkeeper to save a penalty and its repetition in the Champions League.
And as newspaper A Bola now writes about it, they bring back the links with Barcelona and Manchester United, claiming his signing would now be considered cheap.
That’s because Costa is only protected by a €60m release clause. And according to the outlet, European giants see that price as ‘an authentic bargain’.
It’s mentioned that Barcelona and Manchester United both took notes when scouting the goalkeeper in the match against Benfica this month. In fact, the Red Devils had already been linked to him before, and with Diogo Dalot praising his performance last night, that only fuelled the rumours.
A Bola says there are talks between Porto and Jorge Mendes to raise the goalkeeper’s release clause. That’s expected to happen in the coming weeks, and while his current contract is kept, it seems this bargain will remain available.
