Atlético Madrid have decided to wear an all red shirt when they take on Celtic in the Champions League tie at Celtic Park.
The La Liga side have taken this decision to commemorate reaching their first European cup final in 1974. They then sealed a berth after overcoming Celtic in the semi-final and the first leg in Glasgow was seen as one of the dirtiest games in the sport’s history.
Los Rojiblancos’ decision to wear the same shirt against Brendan Rodgers’ side hasn’t gone down well with some Celtic supporters.
This is highlighted by AS, who point out Atlético’s decision has created waves in Glasgow as a Scottish newspaper had ‘Pathetico’ on their front page two days ago.
The newspaper have also interviewed Jaime Martín Delaney, who is the president of Indios de Caledonia, an Atlético supporters club based in Edinburgh.
Delaney has discussed his experience of following the Madrid club and was then asked about the 1974 match at Celtic Park between Atlético and Celtic.
“That is a match that is remembered more in Spain, much more, than here. Older people remember it, of course, it’s generational, but younger people not so much,” he said.
AS then insisted the Glasgow outlet’s decision to use ‘Pathetico’ earlier this week has ‘opened wounds’ for Celtic fans, ahead of their clash against Diego Simeone’s side.
