Atletico Madrid star Jose Maria Gimenez has contradicted recent criticism of Marcelo Bielsa from Luis Suarez, moving to defend the Leeds United icon.

El Desmarque cover comments from the central defender today in which he dismisses claims from Suarez regarding the former Leeds boss.

Bielsa has been in charge of the south American nation since May 2023 and proven to be a massive hit in his 17 games so far, enjoying a points per game ratio of 2.12 and managing big wins over the likes of Brazil and Argentina.

It his first job since his glorious four years in charge at Leeds, in which he led them back to the Premier League and became an icon at Elland Road.

While everyone there still loves the Argentine coach, it seems he didn’t quite win over everyone in the Uruguay set up.

Suarez is one of them and this week came out to criticise the manager, who, after announcing his international retirement a couple of weeks ago, decided to criticise Bielsa for the instructions he’d given the team and his attitudes towards them.

The comments have caused a big rift in the Uruguay camp, with come players coming out to back the striker and defend his comments.

Gimenez is not one of them, though, contradicting what’s already been said and dismissing the claims about the Uruguay manager.

“I was surprised that they said that we were all aware and that it was agreed upon.  The truth is that not all of us were aware,” he said.

“Here the important thing is to find harmony. I don’t think it affects, but many people see tremendous chaos. It is an opportunity to strengthen ourselves as a group.

“These are issues of coexistence that we are all responsible for. We have to find a solution because the most important thing is that we are in the best shape.”
