At the start of the season, and after a couple of poor results, the media around Valencia started to look towards Enzo Barrenechea as some kind of potential saviour.
The midfielder had arrived on loan from Aston Villa in the summer window, after the Birmingham club had bought him from Juventus.
Despite having no La Liga experience, there was huge hype around the 23-year-old. As we explained at the time, it was like all the other options in his position had been tainted by actually playing, whereas Barrenechea was an unknown quantity who optimism could be attached to.
Other options are being preferred and the hype around Barrenechea has almost completely disappeared.
The loss of media hype isn’t a bad development, with it getting out of control at one point. The Argentine, however, does need minutes and the curve at the moment is going the wrong way for him.
By coincidence, his family moved to Valencia before the transfer was even a possibility, so he’ll have a good support network in place.
Now he just needs to keep pushing so he can convince manager Ruben Baraja that he’s worth a starting spot again.
