Aston Villa and West Ham United have positioned themselves to sign Sergi Roberto on a free transfer this summer, according to claims from Spain.
The 32-year-old’s deal at Barcelona expired on June 30th, and the two parties are open to extending their association.
According to Catalunya Ràdio, Aston Villa, West Ham and Ajax are interested in securing the Spaniard’s services this summer.
This is relayed by Saturday’s edition of AS, who provide a background on what’s needed for him to continue at the Camp Nou, and about Aston Villa and West Ham’s interest.
Roberto, who can operate as a right-back and as a midfielder, is currently training alone. He has no shortage of offers, but his desire is to continue with the La Liga side, although he feels Barca don’t have the same intention.
Earlier this month, Hansi Flick said Roberto isn’t part of his squad, and the newspaper claims the manager’s comment has ‘hurt’ the versatile player.
Barca sporting director Deco met the Spaniard’s agent this week, and made clear that his client can only be offered an extension if there’s a salary margin and his side have already registered other players.
Taking this into account, the chances of Roberto not staying at the Catalan club is ‘gaining strength’ and he’s considering options to join a new club.
Sevilla and Girona have made approaches, but his desire is to join a foreign club. This is where Aston Villa, West Ham and Ajax fit in.
It’s claimed the offers that ‘most seduce’ him are from Aston Villa, West Ham and Ajax. Roberto will have to make a final decision on his future soon.
