Aston Villa may be given a second shot at signing Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan in the coming months, despite him being on the verge of signing a new contract.
That’s according to Tuttosport, relayed by Inter News, who say that his new deal doesn’t put an end to transfer speculation.
The newspaper reports that Dumfries is close to signing a renewal with Inter, worth around €4m a year plus bonuses.
The full-back had looked likely to leave not long ago after his initial request for more money wasn’t taken by the Italian giants. That led to speculation about his future and Aston Villa even went as far as to make a ‘survey’ for him.
Nothing came of that, and he remained where he was, with only the signature left for his renewal to be finalised. That doesn’t mean the end of a transfer, though, according to Tuttosport.
They say that the Premier League ‘remains in the background’ and there is actually a possibility that his renewal could be a ‘sort of fair compromise’ between the two parties.
The newspaper adds that a transfer will be possible next summer, and this agreement could be a way for both parties to part happily. Whether that would be in the form of a release clause, or an agreed transfer fee isn’t clear.
It would make sense, though, given Dumfries’ deal expires next summer. A new deal will allow Inter to avoid losing him on a free, especially given he can speak to clubs from January.
Whether Aston Villa want to return or try anything more concrete for the Dutchman remains to be seen but the opportunity may remain, even if he does sign a new contract as expected.
