Aston Villa target Pedro Vite is now seen as unlikely to stay at Pumas UNAM, even though the Mexican club have not yet received a formal offer for him.
The Ecuador international has already been linked with Unai Emery’s side this week, while the City Football Group have also been credited with interest after scouting in Mexico.
That has created a growing transfer picture around the 24-year-old, who comes off a good season with Pumas but truly impressed at the World Cup with strong performances for Ecuador.
According to Record México journalist René Tovar, the chances of Vite staying with Pumas are now “almost impossible”.
He adds that the midfielder has not, for now, received a formal offer from any club at the offices of the Mexican side. Even so, those inside Pumas consider the chances of keeping the Ecuadorian to be minimal.
Pumas already braced for exit
Pedro Vite’s situation has been developing for a few weeks. We recently covered claims from Ecuador that Aston Villa had identified him as a target and made an initial approach. That report stated Villa were expected to submit a formal offer after Ecuador’s World Cup campaign.
His country have now been eliminated, which gives the Premier League side a clearer route to advance if they want to do so.
The latest from Mexico suggests Pumas are not treating the idea of a sale as distant. They appear to be waiting for the first formal bid, rather than expecting Vite to continue with them.
But any interested party would have to consider a bid worth up to €8.7m (£7.5m), which reportedly looks close to the figure Pumas were believed to want for a sale.
CFG interest in background
Pedro Vite has also been linked with the City Football Group, who recently had representatives scouting in Mexico.
Reports there suggested CFG were looking at a move before the World Cup could push his value higher.
There was also talk of internal discussion over which club in the group would receive him if a deal progressed. But that’s water under the bridge now, as he was one of the top performers in the group phase.
Vite joined Pumas from Vancouver Whitecaps in July 2025 and has three years left on his contract. He has been used in central midfield, defensive midfield and more advanced roles, giving Villa a versatile option if they decide to move.
Waiting for first formal bid
Pedro Vite is now in that familiar transfer-market stage where everyone expects movement, but the paperwork has not yet arrived.
Record México make it clear there is no formal offer at this point. That protects Pumas from overplaying the situation. Yet the same report says keeping him is viewed as almost impossible.
For Aston Villa, that sounds like an invitation to accelerate. For the City Football Group, it keeps the door open.
The next step should be simple. But someone has to put an offer on the table.
