As Aston Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen today held a press conference at the national team camp, it turned out to be quite emotional for him.
The player recently announced he’s partnering up with Mustaschkampen, a campaign from the Prostate Cancer Association which helps raise money in the fight against the disease.
Olsen was then asked by Swedish journalists about what he’s doing and the reasons for it. And as reported by Fotbollskanalen, the Aston Villa goalkeeper ended up in tears and having to ask the journalist to quickly move on.
“My grandfather got… that’s why,” said Olsen.
“Can we talk about something else, I don’t want to talk about it.”
Fotbollskanalen also feature Olsen’s message on social media, where he managed to explain the partnership better.
“In my life as a public figure, I have had the privilege of experiencing unforgettable moments on the football pitch, feeling the cohesion of a team and the love of the fans. But alongside football, I have also felt that I want to be part of making a difference using my platform. That’s why the idea of ‘Charity Golf by Robin Olsen’ was born – a personal mission to support the fight against prostate cancer, a disease that affects so many people around the world, including people close to me.”
Olsen was a starter in Sweden’s match against Denmark this week, and they now have a new friendly against Serbia tomorrow. With the national team out of the Euros, the goalkeeper is having some time off until returning to Aston Villa for the pre-season.
The goalkeeper is a well respected and liked figure in Sweden, and the humanity he’s shown today, and his charity efforts, will only underline that further.
