Enzo Barrenechea will return to Aston Villa after spending last season on loan at Valencia.  The midfielder impressed for the La Liga club towards the end of the season and was appreciated by a large section of their supporters.

On June 4th, Aston Villa director Monchi confirmed “many clubs” want to sign the midfielder this summer. He also said Unai Emery will decide whether or not to include the 24-year-old in his plans next season.

TyC Sports states River Plate have identified the Aston Villa player as a target to improve their midfield. Inter Milan eliminated the Argentine side from the Club World Cup and this defeat made them realise their need to sign a midfielder.

River Plate manager Marcelo Gallardo and his coaching staff like Barrenechea, who seems set to leave Aston Villa either on loan or a permanent transfer. Therefore, the South American club have made an approach for him.

TyC Sports report the opportunity to play in the Copa Libertadores and being managed by Gallardo ‘seems like a difficult proposition to refuse’. However, Barrenechea’s entourage have ruled out a move to River Plate.

His agent intends to find a club in Europe to improve his chances of representing Argentina at the 2026 World Cup.

Last week, El Desmarque reported Real Betis have identified Barrenechea as the favourite target to replace Johnny Cardoso.
