Leeds United’s move for Hidemasa Morita may not be as clear-cut as Portuguese reports had recently suggested. Now, fresh claims place Aston Villa and Brighton firmly in the race for the Sporting midfielder.
For weeks, the narrative around Morita had increasingly pointed towards Elland Road. Portuguese outlets described Leeds as the favourites.
They also reported a formal proposal, and framed Premier League survival as the final condition needed for the player to approve the move.
Now, though, another angle is being confirmed in Portugal.
Aston Villa and Brighton enter picture
Portuguese newspaper O Jogo report Leeds remain in front in the race for Morita. However, they are no longer alone there.
Aston Villa and Brighton are also mentioned as interested in the Japan international, who is preparing to leave Sporting at the end of his contract this summer.
Morita has wanted a Premier League move for some time. Leeds had already explored a transfer in 2025. Daniel Farke’s admiration for the midfielder has repeatedly been highlighted in Portugal.
However, the emergence of Villa and Brighton introduces a different level of competition.
Why Morita is attracting attention
The 31-year-old is available on a free transfer, which naturally increases interest around the market. But there are also football reasons behind the growing attention.
Morita’s versatility remains one of his strongest selling points. He can operate both deeper in midfield and in a more advanced number 8 role. In addition, his positional intelligence and technical security make him attractive to clubs looking for more control in possession.
He averages about 4 recoveries per game, and has accumulated only 3 yellow cards all season while playing as a defensive midfielder most of the time. So we are talking about an experienced, talented player, who was part of Sporting’s back-to-back league winning seasons in 23/24 and 24/25, and with Champions League and World Cup pedigree.
That profile helps explain why Brighton and Aston Villa would be interested. Also, it suggests clubs competing at a higher level than Leeds – with European football almost certain for next season – are also paying attention to the opportunity.
Morita has made 164 appearances for Sporting since arriving from Santa Clara in 2022, scoring 11 goals and adding 16 assists. He has also been one of Rui Borges’ most trusted players this season.
Leeds United no longer have clear run
Leeds still appear strongly positioned. The relationship with the player is long-standing. Premier League survival has now been secured. In addition, Portuguese reports continue to describe Elland Road as the most likely destination.
But due to these latest development, Villa and Brighton entering the frame suggests the market around Morita is broader than first thought. And because there is no transfer fee involved, the situation could accelerate quickly if more clubs decide to move.
