Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz has spoken to fans of his former club Vasco da Gama on Tuesday night.

On the Rio de Janeiro side’s Youtube channel, the player has talked about his time in Brazil and experience in English football so far.

Sold by Vasco to Manchester City on a €12m deal in 2017, Douglas has spoken about the importance that Pep Guardiola had in his career, helping him to improve and become the player he is now.

“Actually, I have no words to talk about him. He’s a guy who is focused on football, his life is football. For me, he’s the best coach in the world. In two months, the guy managed to evolve more than 70% of my potential in my conception”, said Douglas Luiz (via Fox Sports).

“I’m very fond of him, I thank him so much for everything he did. I feel very honoured to have this affection from a great coach, who for me is the best, for my football.”

Regarding Aston Villa, the player has compared the club to Vasco da Gama, referring to Villa Park as a ‘cauldron’, like the São Januário stadium is called by their fans.

“I didn’t expect to be sold, but I think God knows everything. I’m very happy in this great club that, for me, is like Vasco. They have their own cauldron, they have a very passionate crowd for the club. It’s a club that are recognized throughout the country. And I’m sure the club are very happy… There is a clause that Manchester City can buy me in these first two years.”

There were obviously a lot of questions about his return to Vasco as well. Douglas Luiz has made it clear he loves the club, and is looking forward to make his return at some point of his career.

“I still want to go back in the near future and give a lot of joy to this crowd.”

Signed by Aston Villa on a £15m move from Manchester City last summer, Douglas has three goals and two assists in 32 appearances for the club. He joined them on a contract until 2023.
