Aston Villa will know by Monday if they have a chance of hiring Monchi from Sevilla this summer, with the Spanish club putting a ’48-hour deadline’ on his future.
That’s according to ABC Sevilla, who say neither Monchi nor Sevilla want the uncertainty over his future to ‘extend beyond Monday’.
They explain that the ‘situation is tense’ between Monchi and Sevilla at this moment in time after he made it clear he wants to leave following their win in the Europa League.
Since then, the relationship with the club has been ‘festering’ to the point where it seems likely he will be departing rather than remaining at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán.
At the moment it seems there will be an ‘absolute divorce’, but the coming days will be those in which a final decision is made.
It’s a delicate situation that has not been made easier by Aston Villa, whose efforts to hire Monchi have been added into the mix and made it all the more complicated. That offer is described as ‘very strong financially’ for the Spaniard.
Monchi had made it clear he wants to leave earlier this week and Sevilla responded to that by insisting his release clause be paid. He did not like this, but the Spanish side insisted upon it after learning there were outside parties such as Aston Villa in the mix.
They believe Monchi could be on his way to Villa Park and want to be compensated if he is, with the clause valued at around €2m.
That would not be an obstacle for Monchi or even Aston Villa, but the problem lies in the fact that the former does not believe he should have to pay to leave. He feels he has earned the right to choose his own future without penalties.
Hence the current disagreement between him and Sevilla and the tense situation which should reach a conclusion either way by Monday.
