After all the positive news this week about English fans abroad, it seems Feyenoord decided to spoil things before their clash with Aston Villa.
That’s at least according to Voetbal Primeur, who report that Feyenoord fans ‘sought confrontation’ with Aston Villa fans on Wednesday evening.
According to them, a brawl broke out in Rotterdam city centre between the two sets of fans. Police were forced to intervene and break it up.
An Aston Villa supporter then told various media outlets that he and other Aston Villa fans had been attacked by Feyenoord supporters while drinking in Rotterdam city centre. This group of Feyenoord fans was 20 to 30 strong.
They were ‘chased away’ by the Aston Villa supporter and police. The latter had been called in to deal with the situation. There are no reports of any injuries or anything serious at this point. That will come as good news given what happened to Celtic fans in Serbia.
It is a disappointing incident, though, spoiling what had been a good few weeks for English fans abroad with Nottingham Forest and Newcastle both enjoying themselves in Seville and Brussels respectively.
