Aston Villa ‘cannot reach a deal’ to sign defender Lutsharel Geertruida from Feyenoord and he will instead be joining RB Leipzig.

That’s according to Voetbal International, who report that the German side appear to have won the race for the defender.

The newspaper reports that Leipzig have moved quickly to sign Geertruida as they plan to sell Mohamed Simakan to Al-Nassr.

He’s always been on their radar, but they’ve accelerated efforts today as Simakan appears to be on his way to Saudi Arabia.

That’s seen them push ahead of Aston Villa for him. The Villans had shown interest in a late deal but ‘cannot reach a deal’ at this point.

That’s left the path open for Leipzig, who had already targeted the player last year and are now pushing to get a deal done with Feyenoord.

The Dutch side still want a significant fee for their man, despite the fact he only has 10 months remaining on his deal, so that could hold up matters.

Whether that hold-up is enough to give Aston Villa one last chance to get him remains to be seen, although the prospects look slim at this point.
