Barcelona continue to fall over their own feet when it comes to Clement Lenglet. In the summer 2022 window they loaned the player to Tottenham Hotspur with the plan that they’d never see him again.

That plan looked to be going reasonably well, and the Frenchman was a used part of the Spurs squad. Then he was linked throughout summer 2023 with a return to Tottenham, but as Catalan newspaper Sport say, Barcelona ruined it all by asking for too much.

Tottenham could now potentially use the player, given Cristian Romero’s red card and the nasty looking injury to Micky van de Ven. Instead, Lenglet is at Aston Villa, where he’s got zero domestic minutes so far under Unai Emery.

Sport say there’s been a consideration at Barcelona to cancel the loan in January, bring him back, and loan him to a Spanish club instead.

However, with it being Lenglet nothing is simple, and the same report says Aston Villa ‘assure’ the player they value him and wouldn’t want to part ways.

Sport state he’s again set to start in the UEFA Europa Conference League on Thursday evening, this time against AZ Alkmaar, and Aston Villa seemingly think that’s a good enough reason to have him.

At least for now.
