Arsenal are willing to make a large investment to sign Rodrygo from Real Madrid in a deal ‘which could exceed €90m’.

That’s according to AS, who report that Arsenal are keen on the Brazilian and plan to negotiate for him after the Club World Cup.

They report that Arsenal want Rodrygo to spearhead their new project alongside Bukayo Saka and, after securing Kepa and Martin Zubimendi, director of football Andrea Berta intends to continue shaking up the market.

Contacts with Rodrygo’s entourage have been taking place since before the end of last season. They’ve made it clear that they are willing to make a large investment to convince him to move to the Emirates. That is an investment ‘which could exceed €90m’. They want him to be the most expensive signing of the year.

It’s a deal that will be cooked slowly. Very slowly, in fact. The forward has already asked to cut off all communications so he can focus on the Club World Cup. Thus, the deal won’t pick up pace until August.

The first plan is to speak to Xabi Alonso about his future. If the Spaniard makes it clear he’s not in his plans, Rodrygo won’t object to a departure so long as he can choose his own destination.

Arsenal would like to make him the icing on the cake of what they hope will be a busy summer reshaping the squad.

We would question their desire to spend €90m on a player who is clearly not at his best and who Real Madrid seemingly don’t want. That feels like an exorbitant fee, particularly when they are haggling over lesser fees for the striker they desperately need.
