Thomas Partey has been one of the standout players for Atlético Madrid this season.
Mundo Deportivo explains the Ghana international has grown over the years and has now become been a key player under Diego Simone.
Unlike the past summers, the midfielder was not heavily linked with a move away from the Spanish capital club and Arsenal were one of the few clubs reported to be interested in the 26-year-old.
The Catalan newspaper states the Premier League has been a ‘great threat’ for Los Rojiblancos as several clubs, including the Gunners, were ‘willing’ to go for Thomas.
Even though no deal took shape, Atlético are aware of the threat from England and their priority is to now offer him a new deal so that they can increase his buyout clause from €50m.
The player’s current deal runs down in 2023 and the new deal will also see him double his wages. Atlético’s desire is to secure Thomas’ future before the end of this year.
A new deal with a higher release clause would make it more difficult for Arsenal and other clubs to sign Thomas.
