Beating Paris Saint-Germain at the weekend, Rennes once showed their Coupe de France victory over Thomas Tuchel’s side last season wasn’t a fluke.
Other than the result, which was already eye-catching in itself, a certain Eduardo Camavinga wowed viewers from across the globe with his performance, completely controlling the game against one of Europe’s better sides at the tender age of 16.
The midfielder calmly displayed his evident talent throughout the game and, as you can imagine, clubs around the world took notice, including Tottenham and Arsenal, according to L’Equipe.
Already aware of what Camavinga could do, the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich (as well as the two Premier League clubs), showed interest a few months ago before the summer transfer window.
A few of them (although their identity isn’t revealed) even went as far as suggesting to Rennes they would buy him this season and then loan him back to the Ligue 1 side for the next two seasons.
Camavinga and his entourage, however, dismissed that option in order to sign a new contract with his current club, but the interest is still there.
L’Equipe reckon clubs, which we can only assume will include Arsenal and Tottenham, are likely to come knocking once more next year, needing to deal with Moussa Sissoko, the agent also in charge of a certain Ousmane Dembélé.
Whether the Gunners and Mauricio Pochettino’s side do come forward remains to be seen, and considering Unai Emery and co. did a similar deal with William Saliba to what was on offer for Camavinga suggests they might have been one of the few to have come forward this year.
