As reported by the Italian media this week, Serie A side Monza are about to make official the signing of Pablo Mari from Arsenal.
Following the guarantee they’re staying on the top flight next season, they are now obligated to buy the defender for €5m.
That’s great news for the Gunners, who are selling a player who they haven’t used in the past couple of seasons. However, not all of that money is going their way as Brazilian outlet O Dia comes up to say that Flamengo actually have the right to get 40% from that operation, and will, therefore, receive €2m from Arsenal.
That percentage was agreed back in the time the Rio de Janeiro club negotiated Mari’s transfer to the Gunners.
The move initially happened in January 2020 on a paid €8m loan, and was then made permanent in the following summer, for an other €6m, with the London side spending a total of €14m.
So it turns out that Arsenal actually made a quite heavy investment in Mari, especially if we consider that the defender only made 22 appearances for the Gunners, and this sale recovers nearly nothing close to that.
