Arsenal’s interest in Valencia’s Cristhian Mosquera was initially reported in the UK. It was also stated the defender and Gunners had reached an agreement, which was backed up in Spain on Friday.

Journalist Germán Muñoz reported Arsenal’s offer convinces Mosquera, who had been keen to sign an extension at Mestalla.

Later that day, Radio Marca reported the La Liga club had already rejected an Arsenal offer worth less than €20m.

Saturday’s edition of Superdeporte reports on Los Ches turning down the Gunners’ offer and provides the latest. Despite the rejection, the north London club ‘will not give up’ on signing the 21-year-old, whose contract expires in 2026.

Valencia manager Carlos Corberán wants to keep the centre-back, and their sporting director Miguel Corona has already met with his agent to discuss a renewal. Los Ches are yet to make an offer, weeks after the representative met Corona.

The Spanish club have appointed Ron Gourlay as their new CEO, and he’ll arrive at the club in July. The newspaper states Gourlay’s arrival is awaited before finalising an offer to the defender.

In the coming weeks, Valencia will consider how far they can go to renew Mosquera’s contract. They need to offer him a convincing sporting project and a salary in line with his performances.

The newspaper states: ‘It’s complicated, but Valencia still has a slight margin of opportunity, as the player has always been willing to listen and hasn’t completely ruled out remaining at Mestalla.’

While Valencia are waiting for Gourlay’s arrival, the Gunners can take advantage of this to try and wrap up the operation quickly.

Arsenal ‘attract Mosquera a lot’, with the sporting project and financially. Therefore, he’s given the green light to the north London club to proceed with the negotiations.

Superdeporte end the report by stating: ‘They [Arsenal] have opened the door and have the advantage of Mosquera’s contractual situation. Negotiations, therefore, are by no means closed, but completely open, and further moves from Arsenal are expected for the Under-21 international.

‘Valencia, for its part, is trying to gain ground. At least, the idea it conveys is that it will not sell him at any price. Of course, they know that to renew his contract, they would have to present Mosquera with a proposal that aligns with his role in the dressing room.’
