Arsenal swept aside Southampton 5-0 in the FA Cup on Saturday, a big result largely overlooked because of the cup upsets elsewhere. For Arsenal fans and Arsene Wenger it was especially good to see Danny Welbeck return to prominence.
The former Manchester United player has had repeated struggles with injury since moving to Arsenal, and is making another comeback towards his top level. He looked like he’d got there against Southampton, with two goals in the first 22 minutes.
Welbeck blew Southampton away and from then on in it was much easier for the Arsenal team as a whole, with Theo Walcott going to get a hat-trick as Wenger’s side edged into the last sixteen.
Each week Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport pick a selection of the best performers from around Europe, and Arsenal’s Welbeck made his way in, one of only two players from English football to do so, the other being Chelsea’s Willian.
