Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi is a target for Barcelona in January, with his agent confirming talks over a potential move.

The German defender has found himself out of favour at the Emirates this season, with Gabriel Magalhaes’ arrival pushing him further down the pecking order.

He’s managed just two Premier League appearances all season, and with his contract expiring next June, it is widely felt he is one Arsenal could look to move on in January.

A return to Germany looked the most likely option but recent weeks have seen him named as a cheap option for Barcelona, who are in need of another centre back after losing Gerard Pique to injury.

That’s now been confirmed by his agent Emre Öztürk, who told SPOX journalist Fabian Zerche “I’m not in Barcelona because of Yusuf Demir, but because of Shkodran Mustafi from Arsenal, whom we also represent” when questioned about a recent post on Instagram showing him at the Camp Nou.

He titled this post “ready for meeting” which means that negotiations are seemingly underway with Mustafi about a potential move.

Now, whether that’s over a free transfer for next summer or a move in January isn’t clear at this point.

The likelihood is that Barcelona want to wrap up a contract agreement first before then approaching Arsenal, which would make sense as they’ve done similar with Manchester City’s Eric Garcia.

Doing so gives them something of an upper hand in negotiations, which are unlikely to be tense anyway.

This appears to be one to keep a close eye on as we fast approach January then, with a shock move seemingly very much on the cards.
