Mikel Merino’s impending move to Arsenal will be celebrated by Real Sociedad, as they secure a ‘historic’ price for the midfielder.
That’s according to El Diario Vasco, who cover the departure today and how it will be ‘among the most expensive’ in the history of the Spanish club.
The newspaper states that Real Sociedad have one again ‘starred in a historic sale’ with the deal they’ve agreed to sell Merino to Arsenal.
He will become the fourth most expensive sale in the history of the club, bringing in €33.5m plus €5m in variables after a deal was agreed with Arsenal yesterday.
That will make him ‘one of the best signings’ in the club’s history given they paid €12m to sign him from Newcastle in 2018.
The deal with Arsenal has been something Sociedad have fought hard for after ‘weeks of intense negotiations’.
They have ultimately secured a top price for the Spanish midfielder. Only Alexander Isak’s €70m plus €5m move to Newcastle, Antoine Griezmann’s €32m move to Atletico Madrid, which Sociedad later pocketed €24m from when he joined Barcelona, and Robin Le Normand’s €34.5m plus €5m move to Atletico have secured the club more.
It seems they’re happily waving Merino off to Arsenal, pleased with the deal they’ve secured for the 28-year-old, who has given them ‘outstanding performance’ and an even better pay off.
