Spanish side Villarreal have been in contact with Arsenal about a move for goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez as they struggle to get a deal for Granada’s Rui Silva over the line.
El Submarino Amarillo are undergoing something of an overhaul this summer, with new manager Unai Emery keen to overhaul the squad.
They have already added Francis Coquelin, Takefusa Kubo and Dani Parejo but are continuing their rebuild and have eyed up Silva from Granada.
Their La Liga rivals want at least €15m for the Portuguese international, though, and so far none of his suitors, including Villarreal, have come near that price.
The website states they have ‘tested’ the Gunners over the goalkeeper, which probably translates as they’ve made an enquiry about his availability.
That is quite literally the extent of the information they provide, failing to state how that enquiry was received at the Emirates, or if either Arsenal or Martínez are even open to a move.
The news is interesting, though, as not only would it see Martínez reunite with Emery but it also adds to the story that’s been building around the Argentine in recent weeks.
He impressed for Arsenal last season with Bernd Leno out injured, but the German seems to remain number one as far as Mikel Arteta is concerned.
That has led to numerous reports, and indeed comments from Martínez, that he would be happy to move this summer should the right offer present itself, and that offer may now be there from his former manager.
