Brazilian side São Paulo surprised everyone last night by announcing the signing of national team star Daniel Alves.

The former Barcelona right-back, who has always admitted being a São Paulo fan, has signed a deal with the club which runs until December 2022.

The deal came out as a shock since there had been a huge race to sign the 36-year-old. As learned by Sport Witness, Arsenal and Manchester City were two of these clubs.

Turkish, Chinese, French, Spanish and Italian sides have also tried to sign him, including Juventus and Inter Milan. In total, more than 20 clubs have approached the player’s entourage.

The reason why Alves chose São Paulo instead of Arsenal and Manchester City was the contract length. No one could offer him a two-and-a-half-year deal like the Brazilian side.

Dani Alves will make over a million reais (around £220k) a month at São Paulo. That’s not a lot for the European standards, but it’s a huge salary for Brazilian sides, and the club now look for new plans to afford these wages.
